August (The Summer I Turned Pretty Trailer) Music Video
This music video may be just a girl with her phone and a dream, but I hope you too can feel some of the magic of my childhood summers through this video! ☀️
Since 2003, growing up I would spend at least one month of the year in the South of France. That month being... you guessed it - August! (I think I've now had more birthdays there than anywhere else!)
I'm no longer able to go quite as frequently, and not always with my family (or necessarily in August 😢), but it remains one of my favourite places in the whole world. If every person has a perfect place where they function best and feel the most themselves - summer in the South of France is it for me!
I was there when Folklore was released and it was just perfect. It quickly became not only my favourite album, but so closely associated with France - I listen to pretty much nothing else while I'm out there now.
As soon as I heard this version of the song, and saw the trend of everyone running down beaches singing to it, a vision popped in to my head.
So of course I hijacked my parents holiday and made my mum help me create this vision 😛 And just like the chill nature of my holidays, this was a very chill project, just filming random segments on my phone as and when inspiration struck!

Christine Daaé's Dead - Musical Theatre Murder Mystery Cabaret Highlights

For my drama school dissertation for my MA in Musical Theatre I had to do a solo 1hr long cabaret. Being me, this ended up as a Murder Mystery Cabaret! Y'all doing this from the 16 personalities website, it states itself that it's more big 5 focus than actual MBTI focus To quote the website itself under the "Our Theory" section: "With our NERIS model, we’ve combined the best of both worlds. We use the acronym format introduced by Myers-Briggs for its simplicity and convenience, with an extra letter to accommodate five rather than four scales. However, unlike Myers-Briggs or other theories based on the Jungian model, we have not incorporated Jungian concepts such as cognitive functions, or their prioritization. Jungian concepts are very difficult to measure and validate scientifically, so we’ve instead chosen to rework and rebalance the dimensions of personality called the Big Five personality traits, a model that dominates modern psychological and social research."

    In it’s defense: The original mbti goes much deeper than companies show; they water it down and turn it into a zodiac thing so that way it’s accurate for everyone, even if they mistype. The idea of the “cognitive functions,” which companies don’t ever talk about, does have some merit to it though (or at least what I’ve seen in people.) I’m aware that my personal experience isn’t exactly credible to anyone, but regardless; I’ve been able to use it to help use as a figurative stool to try to grasp a person’s traits. Who dislikes small talk and to what degree, how observational someone is, even what people are self conscious about. However, again, this is just a tool that only works like 80% of the time. It can’t be used to jump to conclusions, but it helps to know what to look for in a person when im psychoanalyzing them. The most unstable it gets should be “if person had traits A and B, they likely have C” I don’t know if anyone understands this; whether I’m just explaining horribly or I’m just weird, but I know it works for me. It’s obviously not as reliable as actual psychology, but this works well enough. Standard psychology is too complicated for me to handle. Also expensive Also, about different types acting different, that is entirely true. I have a friend who’s the same type as me (entp) and we act almost as opposites, but we still talk the same and think similar, if that makes sense. I act much more introverted, despite being an extrovert type, but we have the same perspective on questions and respond similar. We can never vent to each other because we have no advice for anything; since we’re in the same boat, if that makes sense. I have two estp friends who have the same situation as well, so I know it’s not just me. I’m expecting the replies to try to prove me wrong despite not having done much, if any research, but if there’s any questions I’ll probably reply

    The Brick is very very introspective. Part of why the musical is the best adaptation is because you can't make a film character speak about their feelings uninterrupted for 4 minutes, but that works in a musical really well.

    You calling the writing poetic made me smile because Victor Hugo _was_ a poet, he wrote massive amounts of poetry and you can feel it in the book's writing. Also, the english show does try to have references in the lyrics like the original french concept album, some don't make it, but they added some in which I personally think compensates.

    When I saw this video I immediately put it last on my Watch Later list after the last part of the eight or so broken up Librevox audiobook. I’m getting better used to Victorian fiction, but French Victorian fiction!? This review nailed (and clarified) it all very well for me. An insightful piece of wisdom and history during a wild time in France’s past. I think [reading] it was well worth it even if some of it was very esoteric and other parts exhaustive in its detail. So many touching moments that, as expected for certain, weren’t explored or, in some cases, touched on in the various adaptions.

    Your description of your journey through Les Miserables reminds me of my experience with The Count of Monte Cristo. I bought the book in 2020 and am just now, in 2024, closing in on the end. Also I will mention that if you can reliably read 100 pages an hour in a typical novel, that's quite impressive and I envy you. I have clocked my progress on The Count and usually only get through about 25 pages in an hour.

    Why don't you write an abridged version since you handled the whole book with such distaste ? No, I am not being rude. It would help a lot of students to know how to abridge and not just a synopsis of a book. Personally, I have yet to see an abridged if Le s Miserable and wonder how one would handle the digressions, maybe leave them out ? An interesting exercise, to say the least. I ,like many others, knew that Hugo had that tendency of digression in all his books ( the one which is often quoted is the sewers of Paris ), but there are many, many more. Actually, Tolstoy did digress quite a bit. So, was it word count and money ? Who knows. Dickens, Wilkie Collins etc dependent on length for money. Anyway, please do let us know if you would/could undertake such a humongous task ? Kind regards from Cheshire. PS: Excuse UT typos, thanks.

    I am well into the book and I think it is the most over rated shxt I´ve ever come across in my life, it´s not realistic at all, characters have dilemmas that do not look like real life at all, but rather the imaginary world of good and evil of a bourgeoise that is pleased to think they know and understand the lives of the lower classes, it´s stupid morals of good and evil is an absurd pamphlet of good behaviour where guilt is more powerful than kindness, and obedience more important than justice, you come out of that book more stupid than you entered, Im sure Hugo was a prick, and also to torture you over a thousand pages with the stupid cruelty of those destinis, what, am I supossed to think Im wise because I was a witness of all of that?

    "The Brick" is such a perfect nickname. It took me a month finish it, even at a pace of 50 to 100 pages a day. Glad to be a member of the Brick Club! I definitely agree that the musical is an incredible adaptation. Like most epics, I think the novel is a classic case of an author using the novel form to talk about lots of other issues he/she is wrestling with (hence the tangents). It's a profound testament to how good the central story is that I persisted through the unnecessary parts. Thanks for the entertaining video!

    There is a flaw in Cosette's personality. She forgot her father who raised her up for 7 years when she got married. She only appeased her father in his death bed to please Marius. She was literally looking back at Marius to seehis reaction. It might be because of a value that I cherish the most, the Confucian concept of filial piety, that led me to criticize her harshly. As for her other characteristics such as falling in love and dressing up, it's just typical of immature adolescent characteristics. I don't like her.

    If people are interested but intimidated by the book, I recommend listening to the audiobook. I just finished it and I think it makes it a lot easier because the narrator has the right intonations that make long sentences more understandable, and things like that. Plus you can kind of zone out on the hard parts and perk up when they get back to the narrative. That being said, I actually really liked a lot of the tangents. I feel like understanding Hugo's perspective on different things was really interesting, and in general I feel like it gave me new perspective on the world to hear what was important or noteworthy or thought-provoking to a man in a completely different place and time than me. I bookmarked a lot of different quotes, most of which were in the tangents and not in the narrative. One other thing that I feel I got from the book rather than movie adaptations was the deliberations inside of people's head. For example, when Jean Valjean decides whether or not to turn himself in to save the wrongfully accused man, or when Javert lets Jean Valjean go and feels his whole world falling apart, you just don't get that kind of depth from any movie. I do have to admit I'm not a huge fan of the musical but I loved the book, and I love the non-musical movie with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush. This movie does take out a lot and is perhaps not as true to a scene-by-scene breakdown, but also does a really good job of preserving the mercy v justice theme.

      Yessss I just finished the part about Jean Valjean going to Arras... it was amazing and so realistic. I think the audiobook version I am listening to has a really nice contemporary tone so that makes it easier, as well. Apparently it's a more modern translation. Translation can make a difference.

    Okay, so, I don't mean this in a way that de-legitimize your opinion at all, but it seems like you're kind of approaching this from a perspective that any change at all from the source material is inherently a flaw. But, like, I don't know how you adapt this book into this format without changing a bunch of things. And personally, I don't go into this kind of adaptation expecting a recreation of the book anyway. I already have the book and I enjoyed reading it. Why would I want what I already have? You can't just take the book and turn it into a miniseries, because you'll wind up with something basically unwatchable. And that's not a critique of the book, but it's just that a novel and a TV series or film are very very different things. Changes will simply be unavoidable when moving from one to the other. A change CAN be a flaw, but I just don't agree with the idea that it inherently is. That's not at all to say that you're wrong, really. Your opinion is your opinion, but I would have preferred a review that more deeply analyzed the changes and explained why exactly they detracted from the overall story. Like what does making the Thénardiers more abusive to Cosette do to harm their characters, detract from their role in the story, or make them less interesting? And if it doesn't really do those things, then maybe we should think about if it's really a flaw, ya' know?

    • @Just1Bum
      @Just1Bum Рік тому

      Agreed especially with the first paragraph. Your comment applies to fans of other shows too where there's a book or short story or even a comic book series like The Walking Dead that they expect the tv version to be almost an exact replica.

      Things would be different if the creator didn't literally say he wanted to erase everyone's memories of the musical with his excellent new version. Saying that immediately devalues your art, because it goes from an honest artistic endeavor to a mission with a specific goal, and thus, a project that can fail. And undoubtedly, this did fail by its own metric, because no one's going to forget the musical in favor of this.

    • @user-pq4fc1mc7q
      @user-pq4fc1mc7q 3 місяці тому

      1 It was marketed as a faithful adaptation 2 All of the changes were made to make a more pessimistic story, which is contrary to the goals of Victor Hugo 3 Cosette and Eponine were reduced, actually rather TRANSFORMED into sex objects. This is quite a sexist choice to make. Making Cosette and Eponine into a Madonna and a Whore is contrary to the point, which is that they are similar and products of their environments. Also Fantine's story is a warning against that silly dichotomy. 4 Javert is supposed to be a message about how authority is not always correct & the law is flawed. Instead here, Javert is a deviant homosexual. Homophobia is added to what is supposed to be a humanist story Do you see how the changes made ruin the message of the story now?
